Tres marcadores históricos estatales emitidos por el Departamento de Recursos Históricos de Virginia (DHR, por sus siglas en inglés) se dedicarán esta semana en la ciudad de Marion que destacan una escuela secundaria establecida para estudiantes negros durante los primeros años 1930, un árbol "llorando" que evoca la historia de una joven esclavizada que fue vendida lejos de su familia. y una iglesia metodista fundada por afroamericanos durante la época de la Reconstrucción.
Los marcadores serán dedicados y develados secuencialmente en la ubicación de cada uno a partir del mediodía, este viernes 12 15de noviembre, con "Carnegie High School", ubicada en 602 Iron Street en Marion. Los marcadores "The Crying Tree", ubicado en 231 Main Street, y "Mount Pleasant Methodist Church", en 320 South Main Street, seguirán con las inauguraciones en ese orden. El alcalde de Marion, David Helm, encabezará la ceremonia junto con otros oradores invitados. El evento está abierto al público.

El marcador de "Carnegie High School" indica que la escuela se estableció después de que Amos Carnegie, un pastor de 1927 en la Iglesia Metodista de Mount Pleasant, lideró a la comunidad negra en la recaudación de dinero y aseguró una subvención del Fondo Julius Rosenwald para construir el edificio escolar de cuatro maestros. La escuela abrió en 1931 y cerró en 1965, cuando las escuelas en el condado de Smyth fueron desegregadas. El letrero también señala que Katherine Johnson, quien hizo contribuciones cruciales al programa espacial de EE. UU. en la NASA, enseñó en la Escuela Secundaria Carnegie durante varios años. El marcador "The Crying Tree" relata la historia de Sarah Elizabeth "Sallie" Adams (1841-1913), una niña de unos cinco años cuando ella, su madre y otros miembros de la familia fueron vendidos en una subasta de esclavos en el Palacio de Justicia del Condado de Smyth.
